1/48 Hobbycraft Sea Fury - completed 18 Jan 14

Postby harvs73 » Sat Oct 26, 2013 7:31 pm

TO go with the Special Hobby Firefly AS.6 I am making a Sea Fury straight from the box. It is OOB to the point that I painted the cockpit black, weathered it and left it there. I have only rescribed panel lines on the outside prior to undercoating it with Mr Surfacer 1200. I have given it the first coat of Humbrol 90 to represent the Sky undersides. Once it is sufficiently dry it will be time to mask then spray the upper colours.

For something different I painted the firefly Hu23 Duck Egg Blue as I was under the impression it can be a match for the Sky. Unfortunately in comparison to the Hu 90 Matt Beige Green on the Sea Fury it is too blue for what I want on the Firefly.

Nice. Is that a sponge you are using to mask the cockpit interior? good idea.

Troy, they are makeup sponges or something like that. I bought a large packet of them from Priceline(?) for $2-$3 and they have lasted a long time so far. They are easily cut, able to be put in spots without needing tape - a whole pile of uses.

Here it is after the EDSG has been sprayed. As usual the touch up spots were found AFTER the tape came off.

A bit more work has been done on the Sea Fury. I am having drama's with the decals and silvering as you can see The model needs the final detail painting as well as last components added prior to the matt coat. I don't think I will be weathering this as it looks good as is, I may just do some panel line highlights but that will be at most.

Re: 1/48 Hobbycraft Sea Fury - updated 16 Dec 13

Quick tip - for RAN aircraft it's either the RAF/RN style roundels OR red rats in all six positions. No RAAF style mixture.

Yes, I'd go easy on the wear & tear/grubbifying, photos of 105 show here as very well kept.
I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.

David, I went by the Aussie Decals instructions so hopefully they are correct, but it wouldn't surprise me if they just had not updated their instruction sheet. In saying this, on page 83 of The Sea Fury, Firefly and Sea Venom in Australian Service there is a photo of 105 with roo's on the fuselage and roundels on the wings with no centers of any kind - roo or red dot.
