1/700 HMAS Australia finished

Postby Forlornhope » Sun Aug 18, 2013 2:15 pm

Afternoon folks. Now that I have made a good start on this I thought I would share my build of Combrigs 1/700 Battlecruiser Hmas Australia.
I've mainly focused on the forward superstructure so far, but its coming along very nicley although I have a feeling that the rigging done so far is wrong, but I'm not sure I could be bothered changing it. Anyway a few pics.

Thats it so far, still a ways to go and still some clean up and touch ups on whats already done. would be nice to have her finished in time for her 100th aniversery of first sailing into Sydney Harbour (dunno why, just would be nice) and I'm contemplating getting the HP Kit of Hmas Sydney and scratch building a River class Destroyer or 2 for a Pre WW1 RAN diorama to go along with my pre WW2 dio (thats still not finished yet)
For now I'll just focus on this though:)
More soon
Cheers Callum

Nice. Coincidentally, I just saw the RAN share this on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=557037204343414&set=a.504215839625551.1073741825.484693014911167&type=1&theater

That is freakin amazing work mate. I dunno how you do stuff that small. I struggle with 1/72 planes :)
Brother: Do you really need that many Phantoms?
Me: Don't make me kick you outta the shed for asking dumb questions
Brother: But are you gonna build all these models?
Me: Yeah of course I am. Now get outta my shed

Thanks for the comments guys, it is small......I'm trying to get the 4inch guns done tonight, spent more time on the floor looking for the parts than actually building. So far I've lost 3 and finished 3 with 3 more to go. Thanks for the photo and link Destroyer. its back to the floor for me
cheers Callum

Bit more of an update. The forward structure is now pretty much done. just a couple of odds and ends and a bit more rigging that will go on at the end.

Thanks gents, I'm still learning the art of rigging but funnily enough I seem to be better at 700 scale ships than at 72nd scale biplanes.
Moving on with the ship and I have been busy on my days off work. The middle structure was easy as it was only 2 parts. the rear structure was bit more tricky due to the different levels at the rear and having to blend it all in along the join lines. The better the initial clean up of the resin partsmeans less work to do with the joinlines. I didn't do to bad with it but ended up with a few decent scratches from the file.
Anyway enough babble heres the pics :)

I'm waiting on replacement metal barrels for the main guns so can't do the turrets yet, but they can just slip in at the end. I'll get the aft tripod mast done next.Getting the forward tripod together was harder than the rigging, out of the 35 parts on the mast only 10 came in the kit. true most of the rest was brass tubing but I had to measure and cut it and accurrate measureing and actually cutting where I'm meant to, is not something that comes to me very easily. So I'm pretty impressed with myself for getting finished and hope I get the second the same.
Thanks for the comments and thanks for looking
