Harrier II Finished.

Postby RAAFBrat » Sun Jun 02, 2019 1:43 pm

This is the old Monogram 1/48 AV-8B Harrier that I picked up 2nd-hand complete with a large array of aftermarket US Marines decals - all a lovely shade of grey on grey  . A HUGE thanks to Wally for supplying a canopy for it, as it came with TWO windscreens but no canopy & there's no aftermarket out there for it. Much appreciated & actions like that exemplify the spirit of this bunch :) .

Not much to show yet, just the cockpit & some vents etc added, just about ready to close up. There's a mix of Eduard PE & hand-painting there. Funny thing is that the front wheel-well has all this lovely moulded detail, but unless you cut out the door it's unseen. The other drama was the IP. Following the instructions there is NO way that it could be fitted at step 20-something, plus the fuselage walls are nearly 2mm thick + the thickness of the IP surround itself. So, after a LOT of filing down to about .5mm & test fitting, it finally fits. I need to clean up a couple of spots & add maybe a bit more PE - REALLY tiny stuff.

Looks good, did the PE cost more than the kit?

Nice, I like Harriers. My daughters got me the Airfix 1/72 a few Xmases ago and it was a joy to build.

Thanks Thommo. The fuselage has now gone together quite nicely. I'll post some pics tonight.

Some models just fall together, notwithstanding a fair bit of filing back here & there to make bits fit. But this ol' Monogram has gone together quite quickly. It's just about ready for paint.

I don't usually bother with primer, but in this case she's feeling a little green.

Finished the Harrier off tonight. Again, a big thank you to Wally for the canopy - hen's teeth are plentiful compared to these. I couldn't resist using up some spare decals as an ode to the RAN's last prop-Fighter, the Sea Fury - from the same original stable as the Harrier. Apart from the Eduard PE & decals (plus some from the spares box) this is straight OOB. Paint is Tamiya acrylic with Tamiya & British Paints spray lacquer. As this was something of a "Demo" bird, I left it clean & shiny.
