Academy 1/35 RQ-7B Shadow (Aus markings)

Postby hughb » Mon May 27, 2019 7:16 pm

Hi everyone,

Finished this little model off over the past week. It really is a neat kit, and the best part there are no seams to deal with. The kit comes with the pictured base as well as two figures, however these figures are of poor quality. Maybe in the future I'll add an appropriate figure to give some sense of scale. I used Ronin Graphics Australian Army decals which are beautifully thin, they worked a treat.

While building the kit I noticed the Australian version should have extended wingtips with the antenna arrays on either side. At first I wasn't going to worry and painted up the model, however I knew this obvious inaccuracy would bug me to no end. So new wingtips were fashioned from styrene along with antenna from fine brass wire. I also added the small gold dome on top of the fuselage which is not present in the kit. Final touched were a small antenna on top of the fuselage and the arrestor hook under the fuselage, both from the same fine brass.

Great job Hugh. Kudos on the wingtip extensions and antennae, I took the lazy route with mine and went OOB.
Cheers,

Looks good. At first it looked like you went over the top with shading but then I noticed it is the camo scheme.

Cool.

I saw one if these at a drone conference that I attended last year. They're a neat looking bit of kit.

Great job. Not many UAS being modelled at the moment (I have a 1/48 MQ-4B in the stash - it'll be biiiigggg!)

Yes you're right, I believe the wingspan will be roughly 80cm. I have one of those Skunkwork kits too in the stash, including RAAF decals by Ronin. However the RAAF will be using the Triton which has some modifications compared to the normal Global Hawk.

Apparently they will be in service in a couple of years so waiting to see what the operational scheme will be before modelling it. Also I guess I'll need to get myself a big house!

Yeah, the Ronin decals are based on the mock-up, which was displayed at Russell Offices a few years back. I'm hoping someone will do a conversion for the C before I get around to doing it and I'm sure Ronin will revise the decals once we know the actual markings.

Final few shots of the UAV on a base and with a figure to give a sense of scale. I ended up using one of the figures from the kit, but replaced his right arm with the arm designed for the second figure in the kit. This gives him the necessary "knife hand" for pointing. The head was replaced with one from Live Resin, and finished with my mediocre painting of Auscam.

Looks great with the figure to give it scale.
