Hasegawa F-14A VF-2

Postby thevespabandit » Thu Apr 25, 2019 8:30 pm

Heya folks,

Just finished this one off, albeit without armament which is still in the paint shop.

The build was straight OOB which was nice and easy (as far as this kit goes), as usual, the kit cockpit needs a little tweaking/cutting/cursing to get in place. There are about a million different ways to ensure it gets built regarding the front nose and fuselage area, all involving throwing out the instructions. Like a lot of Hase kits, some styrene tabs go a long way.

The painting was pretty fun, lots of mixing different tones, but all starting out with Gunze's 308, 307 and 337 for the base TPS coat. Then varying tones, some masking, and adding Tamiya smoke to get panels and lines to poke out from the rest.
Decals are from Fightertown and are of excellent quality but difficult to match against the dizzying array of greys out there, so I guess painting to the decals kind of helps.

Anyhow, here's the finished product featuring a nice weathered VF-2 Bounty Hunter's Tomcat from around 1991ish.

Loving that low-viz, dirty finish. You've made a grey airplane look visually appealing, well done.

Thanks for the kind words gents, much appreciated.

Chris, the base itself is one of these https://www.tamiyausa.com/shop/plastic- ... lay-goods/

I purchased a whole bunch of them and got a friend to laser out a .8mm x 15mm-20mm rectangular hole in which I could stick a rectangular piece of acrylic into sticking up around 20 cm or so.
Doing it like I have is difficult without a laser cutter, however if you grab some rod and drill out a hole, I can see that you'd be able to yield some good results for some in flight builds.

I've stocked up on quite a few as I think it's a great way to pose aircraft but also makes use of space in the vertical plane, particularly if your strapped for display space like myself.

Really nice subject and build. The weathering looks spot on! I'm feeling the need for speed...
