Academy 1:48 F8F-2 Bearcat

This is something I've had on the boil for a while, working on and off between other projects. Initially the kit was bought to be a quick OOB build as I liked the look of the Bearcat, however we all know nothing can stay stock for long.

The engine is the Quickboost P&W 2800 with added pushrods and spark plug wires. I painted the basic engine before adding these extra items on, and when it came to the pushrods I was initially going to use small diameter Evergreen styrene rod. However I was wondering how to paint the many small rods black before gluing them on. Then I had a stroke of genius, use stretched black sprue! The only issue was ensuring the diameter remained constant for each of the 18 pushrods. Wiring up the 36 spark wires was quite the exercise!

I've used the Aires resin cockpit and wheel well/fuselage sets designed for the Hobbyboss kit. These fit relatively well, and a few extra lines have been added in using solder, and brass tubing for the engine mount framework. An upper oil tank was scratchbuilt by squeezing larger diameter styrene tube into an oval cross-section then end caps glued on. However this can't be seen, even when looking directly into the fuselage through the wheel bay. I also bought the Eduard exterior set also for the Hobbyboss set, Quickboost exhausts and cannons, and the SAC metal gear legs. A Squadron vac-form canopy and aftermarket decals (for the Jolly Rogers) round out the aftermarket items.

The notoriously misshapen cowling was re-profiled by sanding around the front edge to give more of that distinctive curve of the Bearcat cowling. Also the back of the cowling was thinned down to a more scale thickness. The cowl flap vents were cut out on the forward fuselage, backed with styrene, then Milliput used to smooth off the area. I'll make the cowl-flaps from thin sheet brass and add them on once the build is virtually complete. The intakes on the wing leading edges were damaged when Dremelling out the area in order to fit the resin wheel bays, so Milliput helped to restore and shape this area.I wasn't able to make the intakes hollow which is a bummer though.

Soon it'll be ready for a coat of primer. I always have mixed emotions after shooting primer, it's an important step reached, however you then see all the imperfections which you thought had already been fixed!

Gorgeous superdetailing there! Those wheel wells, jnterior and engines look superb. Really well done.

Small update.Cowling is on now, looks like a proper aircraft now. Also I added some inside detail to the cowling.These represent the cowling ring fasteners, not very detailed, but just to add some interest to the inside of the cowl.
