Bud Tingwell's Spitfire PRIV in 1/72

Postby David E » Thu Apr 11, 2019 8:03 pm

When my mate Frischy became too old and decrepit to model in the gentlemen's scale of 1/72 he kindly passed on a bunch of kits and projects to me - being three years younger I can still manage the challenge.

Included in the fleet was an Airfix Spitfire I with a PR conversion, Red Roo Vokes filter and some other bits. Thanks to my fellow AMIers providing photos and information I was able to tackle one of the 680 Sqn PRIVs that was flown by Charles 'Bud" Tingwell.

The kit is the earlier moulding with raised panel lines, which made it easier to remove the panel lines. I boxed in the wheel bays and deleted the wing guns.

I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.

For the blue shade I mixed a couple of ModelMaster paints which went on well. The roundels are the closest that I had in the spares folder, and the serials are from a Ventura sheet.

The canopy is for a fighter recon version and has the armoured windscreen rather than the rounded PR screen. Being a vacform I wasn't game to modify it.

I tried to keep the different sheens of markings and paint with varying success.

An unusual addition to my Spitfire collection.
