Supermarine Southampton hull - a Fred Harris tribute build

Postby David E » Tue Apr 09, 2019 7:21 pm

Quite a few years ago the late Fred Harris handed me a fibreglass 1/72 Southampton hull with the usual "See what you can do with this" instruction. Included were some balsa wing blanks and that was about it. In the intervening years I've had a few ideas of how to model a complete aircraft, including buying a Contrail vacform and a Matchbox Stranraer but I never made any progress.

With Fred's passing last year I was determined to do something with the projects he passed onto me, so when Mr Harvey sent me a set of the lovely Red Roo brass Scarff mounts and Lewis guns I took another look. A photo provided by James the Vintage Aero Writer showed a Southampton hull sitting in a cradle minus flying surfaces and that provided sufficient inspiration.

The mouldings needed a few rounds of filling and sanding before a coat of Tamiya fine white primer. For the varnished timber I chose a Modelmaster brown in the little bottles and was very happy with the result, but I ran out!

The Red Roo mounts and guns went on nicely. Decals were cobbled together from spares and I made windscreens from clear sheet.

Happy with the end result and I hope that Fred would approve.

I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.

Nice rendition of the way the aircraft at Hendon is presented.

Almost - the Hendon boat has the tail fitted. Good source of reference pics for me.
