1/48 Trumpeter Chengdu J-7G

Postby bell209 » Wed Mar 13, 2019 8:40 pm

I'm building this concurrently with the Cessna 172P and Tornado: http://www.trumpeter-china.com/index.php?g=home&m=product&a=show&id=160&l=en

I'll be finishing it as a Tanzanian People's Defence Force aircraft as a reminder of my time working in Dar es Salaam a few years ago.

Here's where I'm at:

I haven't painted the equipment bays as they'll be closed and unseen when I'm done.

I'm using the Eduard MiG-21F-13 detail set as the base kit was a little too bland, particularly the instrument panel. There's no detail set for the J-7G but, as it's essentially an updated version of the MiG-21 and there are almost no photos of the J-7G interior, I reckon it'll do. the seat's different, so I only used the belts from the detail set. I've ordered the Eduard Brassin wheel set for it as the kit comes with those stupid rubber tyres that will stick to the glass shelves in my display cabinet.

I'll be making my own decals for this as none exist currently. I've managed to get another external tank from a fellow modeller in Canberra (thanks, Greg!), so I can portray it with the three external tanks they were usually flying with when I was in Tanzania.

Slowly working on this one, too.

When the windscreen for the Cessna 172 arrives, I'll coat both it and the J-7G with the Future gloss coat before going on to the decals. I'll use the kit decals for the stencils, I think and I've made custom national markings on the printer.

It'll be fitted out with three external tanks, which is why I've set the forward speed brakes cracked open but the rear one closed.

Finished this last week. Thanks to Greg for donating an additional external tank for this project.

Broke the pitot tube about half a dozen times in the last three weeks! If I had my time again, I'd get a metal replacement.
