1st down for 2019, and it's another Mirage

Postby AndrewDoppel » Wed Mar 06, 2019 3:58 pm

Having ended 2018 with a Mirage, I thought I'd start 2019 with a Mirage. This time again it's Mirage A3-105 but utilising the Kinetic 1/48 kit. Since my last build with the Heller kit and Red Roo conversion, I have done a lot more investigating into this scheme and together with Juanita Franzi who helped Motty and Paul out with the schematics for their book, she and I have managed to get this scheme 100% down pat.

As some may recall this scheme was worn by a few Mirages during the 1984 Pitch Black exercises during April 1984 to disguise them a little. I'll let the following explain;

Serial: A3-105

Type: Dassault Mirage IIID

Based: 2OCU (Operational Conversion Unit), Williamtown, NSW (Circa 1980-)

History: http://www.adf-serials.com.au/3a3.htm
http://www.adf-gallery.com.au/gallery/Mirage-III-A3-105
Crashed April 26/4/84 7nm from Darwin. Both pilots ejected safely but have now both passed away.

Kit: 1/48 Kinetic Mirage IIIB/D built OOB with the addition of; Homemade intake bungs, High Planes replacement resin wheels courtesy of Christopher Brown, Master brass pitot, scratch built seat belts, Verlinden RBF tags and modified kit Matra 550s to TDU-11 practice missiles.

Decals from: kit and a couple from the spares box.

Paints are: Humbrol 115 tan, Tamiya Olive Green and Humbrol 166 sky grey.

References: Personal photos including several from Ray Seppala and Jim Barden (pilot) and a few from the net. Motty and Paul's book for the finer details.

NOTE: There is a grey patch behind the cockpit on the starboard side and that the back of the canopy was still painted grey. Identified by Juanita Franzi when she blew up the first image from Ray to hi res.
The zero in the serial number on the top of the tail is also split and not solid like the fuselage serial. There are also no NO STEP or black surrounds on the airbrakes
Most of the other unnecessary stencilling was removed or painted over such as the NO STEP markings on the elevons.

Certainly was, we took 12 or 14 aircraft on that push and all bar the grey jets (2 of them I think) had the brown watercolour treatment

Thanks gents. 42 was definitely in this scheme and I believe No 3 was too. There are pics in Motty and Paul's book.

Thanks Ray, was the paint applied with a brush or painted at the paint shop? The demarcation seems quite tight

Calum, it was done on the line when we got there by the techos and anyone else who could wield a 6-inch paint brush
