Blame the wife - Memphis Belle

Postby thommo » Thu Jan 31, 2019 6:35 pm

First she told me the brown wooden display cabinet I got 25yrs ago did not suit the decor of our new house, and I needed to get a white one.

Job done. Sold the old one to the local undertaker (true story)

Then she said it "needs something big on top" ;)

Job underway :D (she actually suggested the 1/48, but the 1/72 seemed like it was a better kit)....and we both love the movie.

Your wife suggested you should build a model?

And she loves the movie Memphis Belle?

Where did you find such a woman? Are there any left?

Got the bomb bay mostly done. The fit is really nice so far.

A note for future builders - the framework on the bomb bay sides - one piece seems to be molded in reverse (i.e. the rounded fame pieces which I assume should face the bombs as they are visible only do so on one side if it is to fit as per the destructions). I was drinking a few reds while building this, so triple and quadruple checked, but I could not see how it could work other than reversed for one side. Does not really matter as you can't see much up there anyway once installed.

And despite the lack of visibility of the entire interior once the fuselage is closed up, I can't help adding a few details (bright yellow & green O2 bottles, some control wires) in a few strategic spots where they might just be visible....if you look really hard.

I'll only do simple weathering on the inside components because they will be so hidden - save that effort for the exterior.

Also, there are ejector pin marks everywhere, but most you can ignore as they will be hidden.

Scratched up some oxygen tanks from Tamyia 2-part epoxy & stretched sprue to make the inside a little more busy & colourful.

Inside scratching will be limited & strategic adding detail to only the areas that might be visible from outside.

Looks good. But I disagree - you should've done the 1/48 :D . And you got the 2nd-last one of those Wives - I got the last one ;) .

I've been scratching up stoopid small little bits for the cockpit, nose & waist gunner area that I think you might be able to see once it's all close up. I had to remake all the O2 bottles cos my original attempts were too large.
Revell supply a large decal for the instrument panel, but knowing my luck with decals, I cut it into small sections (sometimes individual dials) to apply. However, I am finding these decals bed down nicely using - undercoat of Future, apply Micro-Set, apply decal, brush on more Micro-Set and leave for a minute, push down decal with damp paper towel.
I'm going to cut open the pilot windows and have a crack at vacforming a new nose transparency so some of this work might be a tad more visible.
