Matchbox kits I have known intimately (1/72)

Postby thommo » Thu Jan 24, 2019 10:57 am

I'm a Matchbox collector & tragic from way back in the 70's, and also build a few.

Here's my stash (not for building)

A few of the built kits to follow as I take pics starting with the last one I did, the Walrus off HMAS Australia. I do a lot of interior scratching on the old kits, but like this one, you can't really see it once closed up.

That is one gorgeous Walrus, extremely well done. I too love those old Matchbox classics and have a small stash that’s not as well developed as yours. How did you acquire all those sealed kits.

Cheers. Dave

I've been collecting them for more than a decade, many sealed ones came from the UK but I still find many are sealed on Ebay. I focus on the original issues of each kit, not the re-runs.

Here's another one, complete change of pace from the Walrus, a Buckeye, again lots of cockpit scratching which you can actually see in this one.

Nice to revisit these builds Thommo, I had forgotten about the Buckeye.

The thing I loved about the Matchbox kits was the box art. I see quite a few there I built when they first came out.

Norseman. Shouldn't have built this one because now I need to get the original boxing again for my collection. Usually, I only build those I have a duplicate of.

They all look really good. The Corsair doesn't look like a Matchbox kit at all. I love MB as well, growing up they were quite easy to find and I loved how simple they are.

Thanks for the feedback folks. Yes, as a kid growing up in Bombala, all we could get was Matchbox & the odd Airfix kit from the local newsagents. I loved the Matchbox box art too.

Here's the Matchbox Gladiator done up as Charity from Malta. I did a lot of cockpit scratching on this one & wrestled with the rigging (this was before I discovered the Ammo elastic rigging). I also had to scratch my own rear canopy as when I cut the kit canopy to display open, the rear did not fit over the fuselage.
