Fokker DR.1 - Finished!

Postby RAAFBrat » Wed Jan 09, 2019 8:44 pm

I have a couple of builds going atm. This one & another more recent. This is something different for me as I usually avoid bi or triplanes like the plague - I hate rigging, I suck at it. BUT, the ol' Fokker was a cantilever-wing job so there's very little wiring to be done.

As a kid I built one of these (bright red, of course) in 1/72. Lord knows how, even in 1/48 it's tiny. I now realise why WW works in 1/32  .

This is the Dragon kit & overall it's pretty good with a few quirks. The plastic is a tad brittle (could be it's age) & some of the cockpit framing is like .5 mm & very tricky, but it's coming together. There was some PE included but the decals were toast, which is a pity as the boxtop version also appears in one of my profile books, so I've sourced some aftermarket ones - NOT for the common red version.

Wow you’re right, judging from the last picture she sure is small! Will be great to see it done in a different scheme, a red Dr. 1 is quite garish. At least Dragon had the sense not to mould the plastic in red!

As I recalls, the little 1/72 kit I built as a lad was a bagged Airfix kit moulded in BRIGHT red :D .

Got the basic painting done on the Fokker. She's going to be a colourful bird, even if not all-red :D . Again, the last non-monoplane I built was the 1/72 Tripehound hand-painted red all over, so this was breaking new ground for me. With the fuselage white, wings "streaky olive" on top & turquoise underneath & interplane struts black I sat there looking at it thinking "how the frig am I going to mask all that?"

The only answer I could come up with was to do something I've not done before: paint THEN assemble. We'll see how it goes.

Update. My Son gave me a bottle of "Pledge" so I gave it a go spraying it straight through my little airbrush. A bit thick but went down ok. Then I noticed some "pooling" & like an idiot dried to smooth it out with a damp tissue, which stuffed up the left wing root. Oh well, a bit of touch up. The fuselage side got marked a bit too but I was going to dirty it up anyway.

I'm no master-modeller, but I do like these little PE bits for the mg's. They're flat PE & the kit includes a little tool to roll them up. Then there's the teeny sights on front.

Ok, so a minor disaster. The Pledge sprayed quite ok, if a little thick last weekend but certainly didn't "shine" like I thought it would & stayed tacky days later. Brushing it on had the same effect.
This is the result after I rubbed it off under some warm water. The Aqua undersides that I hadn't "Pledged" were unaffected. Ironically, if I were going for the derelict aircraft look, it'd be ok.
Fortunately, I managed to not stuff up the engine, though there's some more work to do there.

Im sorry to see that, sometimes making model kits isn't the relaxing hobby it should be. In regards to that Pledge, it is not the right stuff for the glossy 'Future' clear coat. I bought the same bottle as that to dip canopies into, did not work.

Thanks guys. I managed to save the wings but the fuselage has now been stripped back awaiting a repaint. I'm all out of my favourite Tamiya acrylic in white, but I do have some Italeri acrylic to try.
