1/48 Cessna 172P

While I'm working on the Tornado, I thought I'd start on my next project. Something a little different from the norm here:

I'm modelling it to represent the aircraft I got my licence in on the Sunshine Coast, VH-SNQ.

The Piper PA-28R in the background, VH-NUS, was my favourite in the fleet - I'm intending to make a model of it from two 1/48 Minicraft PA-24 kits I have, too.

I bought this kit from another AMI member a while back but it had been started a little. The wings were joined but they had an obvious droop which needs correcting. I've decided the best way to attack this is to score some grooves in the lower surfaces and add a couple of spars. The forward one is a brass rod and the rear is carbon fibre that I picked up somewhere years ago.

I've fitted the roof windows as the P model doesn't have them. I'll fill the gaps later. The interior will be first painted white, before trimming in brown and tan. I'm intending to use the decal instrument panel to make a shroud out of brass as SNQ has a brown facia, not black.

Excellent. I've been toying with the idea of buying Italeri's newest version and building it with the Matthias Rust markings, but I don't think I've ever seen a WIP using this mould. I'm keen to follow along and see how it goes. Great idea with the spars!

Ah Sweet! I'll be watching this one an may even get one of the recent repops wherever I can find one.

Sure, it doesn't pull 7.5G, have afterburner or hit a mach number that'll make eyes water, but it's an integral machine in the link of aviation history and an aircraft many are fond of in some capacity.
Happy building, look forward to seeing what you do with the cockpit.

Thanks boys. I think I'll need to do what Eric G did with his O-2 on the landing gear, too. I reckon by the time I add the weighted nose on top of the brass spar it'll be too heavy for the standard plastic main gear without a wire support.

Make sure you add as much nose weight as you can. And then put some more in.........

I loaded mine up and it was juuuuusssst enough to keep the tail up. I think I may have even removed half of the engine to fit more weight.

Very nice! How did you do the down-turned wing tips?

I have already filled the engine with lead shot - it won't be the end of it! Every spare spot will get lead shot added.

I used the Minicraft kit. I thought it would have been a re-pop of an earlier kit like yours. Wing tips are as supplied in the kit.

A good idea to strengthen the landing gear. I didn't, and they do flex a bit under weight.

Been painting this week.

You can see at the bottom one of the main landing gear legs, scored as per Eric Gallier's O-2 mod to take a piano wire reinforcement. I still have another colour to add to the bottom of the sides but I don't have the right colour brown for it here. I'll grab something while I'm at home on the weekend. The seats need to go this colour, too. I'm not going to get too sexed-up with the engine bay - very little of it will be seen once it's all closed up. I'll add the fuel hose from the engine firewall to the engine and I reckon that will do. It needs more weight hidden in it, too. There's already a bit inside the engine but I should be able to hide more on top of the rear cylinders out of sight.

I finished the wing strengthening, too. Very happy with how that's turned out!

Mixed results with this so far. Here's where I've been:

As mentioned earlier, I've stolen Eric's excellent idea of strengthening the main gear. As you'll see in the picture below, there's a fair bit more weight in this kit now!

I'm done with the detailing, too.

On the down side (and I have no idea how), I've lost the rear bulkhead for the cabin (part 4):

It was there earlier in the week and I can only assume I threw it out with the newspaper after I spilled my thinners jar everywhere. Does anyone have a spare?

Very annoying, as it was painted up ready to fit and it's now holding me up. I managed to lose the centre pedestal, too but I was able to fabricate a reasonable facsimile to replace it. I'll have to park it for a while until I can source a replacement as I don't think I can make one from scratch due to its tight dimensions. Sigh.

Managed to get one from Italeri for 5 Euros (makes the kit pretty expensive!). just have to wait for it to arrive now.
