Eduard Brassin 1:48 MOAB

Postby hughb » Sun Dec 02, 2018 7:43 pm

This is Eduard's Brassin line MOAB in 1:48 scale. The pallet/bomb carrier is soldered together, quite daunting but Eduard have designed it well and so is straightforward to put together. Also soldering creates a very strong structure that can support the heavy weight of the solid resin bomb. The resin side rails for the pallet are quite delicate, as is the fins for the end of the bomb which require careful cutting away from the pour stub.

2 painting options are included in the kit, an operational bomb in various shades of aluminium, and the example situated outside the Eglin Air Force Base in John Deere tractor green. I went for this option, and painted it in a contrasting manner to add interest to the model.

Well, there's something you don't see every day! Great job on a unique subject Hugh. Definitely NOT a criticism of your build, it seems Eduard have completely missed the notched restraint flanges that run down the outside edges of the airdrop platform and allow the aircraft cargo handling system to restrain the pallet for flight.

So after having some issues with the Alclad paint developing some cracks, and issues trying to paint over, I elected to strip the paint off and start over. This also removed the putty I had used to fill gaps, hence the current look after spraying primer to find the gaps and refill/sand them down.

I had to remake the side rails from styrene as the resin parts curled and shrunk, I also used this opportunity to make the notched flanges down the sides. Thankyou Enfield for pointing this out, it adds some much needed detail to this area. Other small details like the D-rings and bolts at the rear had to be scratchbuilt, stripping and scrubbing the paint caused these parts to disappear into the ether.

Next another coat of primer and a bit of polishing in prep for the aluminium finish, then hopefully painting for the last time!

Well it's finally finished (though I thought the same thing a few months ago). I'm not at all happy with how the finish on the pallet turned out, up close it's not smooth. However I'm not going to strip the paint off again  . Learnt several lessons about applying NMF's, but still have a long way to go before attempting some of the large kits in the stash.
