DesTROYers 1/35 Meng Leopard AS1

Postby DesTROYer » Sat Nov 10, 2018 8:06 pm

The CSAR hoist for the Chinook didn't arrive yesterday, so this morning as I lay in bed, scratching my... thinking stuff, I thought about what I wanted to build next. I've had a number of project in mind to start and the Leopard AS1 has been on the list for a while.

The kit I'll be using is the Meng 1/35 Leopard 1 A3/A4,

Image
with the Legend AS1Leopard conversion that will give me most of the correct parts for a 1997-2007 era Tank, and the Creation Workshop workable tracks. I'll also be ordering some decals and maybe a replacement gun barrel from Mouse House Australia.

Image
Part one of the build involves assembling the lower hull including the bumpers and torsion bar suspension. I really like how the suspension works. It's making me want to display it on a rocky base so I can have the suspension and tracks in a posed position. In the late 80's the bumper stops were replaced with a newer type that that depicted with the kit parts, however, with the skirts in place, none of it will be seen, so I will be saving myself the $14 cost of the Mouse House update set in this case.

Image
Next up are the wheels, fairly straightforward, I'll be saving putting them on until the hull is painted and the tracks assembled.

Image
Then it was onto the rear of the tank. There are a few parts that will be enhanced with photo-etch here. While I have prepared those parts, I was not in the mood to do any PE folding and glueing today so you'll have to wait to see them. My 1mm flat micro chisel was invaluable here.

Image
Onto the upper hull. So much of the many modifications required to this kit are needed here. I'll be taking my time to get them right. For today, I was just working on the kit parts that are correct.

A test fit of the upper and lower hulls, just to see how it looks.

That's it for today. I'm off to IMAX tomorrow for the Remembrance Day presentation of Peter Jacksons restoration project 'The shall not grow old' so I don't know if I'll get much if anything more done here, but I will try to get a few hours in, in the morning before I go.

Looking really nice, Troy. Gotta love the microchisels, eh!

With the Chinook finished, I've spent the last few days back on the Leopard. The body is finished assembly wise and work on the turret is progressing well. I think I have made a mistake putting the side skirts on so early, without the tracks being fitted yet, but I wanted to fit and paint them at the same time I painted the chassis. Fitting the tracks will be fun, but not impossible. More to come next year.

I'll make up a jig for assembling the tracks. Always fun, but you know I like to torture myself with something on every build.

Happy and safe New Year, everyone.

With the completion yesterday of the bustle rack, the majority of assembly is now complete. I still have to do the machine guns on the cupolas and fit the antennas, both to be done after painting, but the next thing to be done is to start on the tracks, which I plan to start on today.

That's looking great Troy. One thing though, these reference pics show the left forward turret panel as completely smooth with just the grab handle. No weld line or circular bolted rangefinder panel near your resin blanking piece. http://www.grubbyfingersshop.com/walkar ... index.html

Hi Rod, Yes, I have to fill that seam between the drop in piece and the manlet and relocate the handle forward.

The error Rod pointed out has been corrected and the first colour has been put down.

A couple of hours over the last two days has also seen the tracks assembled.

Back to work tomorrow for the first time this year. It's been a great couple of weeks off where a lot has been achieved. I'll put the next two colours of the cam down over the week and then begin the detail painting.
