1/35 Tamiya Berlin Brigade Chieftain - Completed

Postby TiG » Tue Sep 04, 2018 11:42 am

So this is a kit that I was given around 2 years ago, and which I made a start on over Christmas last year. It's the venerable Tamiya Mk5 Chieftain from the 70's, which is probably one of the older kits I've built. It is still surprisingly good quality, and the fit so far has been quite good, with minimal filling/sanding etc. (being Tamiya, this isn't really that surprising).

I am aiming to paint this one up as a 1980's 'Berlin Brigade' urban disruptive camouflage version.

The first step was to purchase an Eduard PE brass detail set to enhance the relatively basic detail (well, compared to modern offerings). I have built up several of the various boxes, parts etc. which will be added to the hull post-paint (I don't want to knock these off during the extensive masking that is to follow. Still not sure I'll do ALL the PE provided, as some of the kit detail is good enough that I can't see the effort paying off in replacing it.

I completed building up the wheels and suspension in January, and have recently dusted it off and built up the upper deck and turret this week. I'm hoping to get the primer and at least the white base coat down over the weekend prior to masking off the brown and blue-grey blocks.

Here are a couple of shots of the weekend's progress. I managed to finish the construction and get an undercoat of Mr Surfacer 1500 Black down (I love this stuff!)
Next step, urban block camo!

Looking forward to seeing this finished, it's been a LONG time since I built this kit.
Cheers,

Here's a couple of quick update shots - grey and brown patches are down! Just about to start masking off the white now.

This is probably the most complex masking job I've ever attempted (I reckon I'll use the better part of an entire roll of Tamiya tape by the end of this job!). It's hard to find good reference shots that agree on the exact location of the swatches, but hopefully it'll be worth the pain. More shots to follow ….

It's been a while since I last worked on this one, but have now got the paint down. It's looking very clean at the moment, but I'm now just about ready for weathering...

I haven't done much on this one recently, but got a chance on the weekend. I must admit that the modelling mojo is waning a bit on this project, but keen to get it off the shelf and completed. Just working on the weathering now, making sure I don't go too overboard, as these beauties were apparently kept in pretty top condition!
