Finally got this in the paint shop which has highlighted some areas I missed in sanding.

I tried black-basing but it doesn't seem to have come out too well. The aircraft was heavily weathered when I flew in it, so I want to reproduce that. I'll try adding some white to the next coat and randomly attacking different areas (with reference to my photos).

I've spent the last few weeks painting, filling, painting, masking, painting but I think it's finally ready for further assembly before a Future coat for decalling.

I've deliberately painted spots around the aircraft different colours as ZD844 was starting to show some of its old RAF Dark Sea Grey colours on the sides where the maintainers were constantly opening the panels and rubbing the old paint off. I can only assume the repaint was just a rough back and recoat as normally they'd have been stripped back to bare metal on a repaint.

Various areas were randomly painted with RAF Medium Sea Grey lightened with a drop of white to emphasise the sun-lightening of some of the paint areas. I'll further work on this with too much flat Tamiya in the Future matt coat.

I'll add the flaps (leading and trailing edge) before the Future gloss coat to aid in decal placement.

Waiting for the Model Master touch-ups to go off before applying the matt coat next week. I need to check my stash at home for some warning decals for the TIALD pod and BOL rails, too.

Once it's matt-coated the final assembly can begin. I'll also need to apply the exhaust staining to the tail once the matt coat is on as I'll use pastels for that.

Very nice looking Tornado Rob...I'm still envious of your luck scoring a ride in one of these!

Cheers

Nice progress Rob. The GR4 looks different with the pale roundels.

Thanks - it was awesome (almost as awesome as flying the Spitfire)!

Been a while since my last update. Managed to get the Tornado home last week in its box in my backpack under the seat in front of me on two flights from ADL - MCY. I put the gear on with a bit of mucking about and found the nose full of lead wasn't needed at all! Oh, well; fitted it with the weight anyway as it's glued in there!

I wanted to get the thing finished before we left on holidays but I had to go to the Long Hot Summer concert with my daughter, which chewed up all of Saturday, so the canopy and pylons will need to wait until the next trip home in July. I did manage to get the TIALD pod on, though.

The lighting is rubbish as I did it inside with the lovely energy-saving globes we have!
