Postby Brett Gibson » Sat Jul 07, 2018 4:43 pm

Hi all,

Starting on the AFV 1/35 Centurion C SQN Vietnam 1971.

Kit is the AFV 1/35 given to me about 5-10 Xmas ago.

Some bits used
Firestorm resin turret.
Firestorm Cent conversion
MH cent
Friul model tracks ATL-65
Arms Corps models jerries, 7.62mm boxes etc.
Bravo Six 77 set
Alder nest barrels .30cal
Military Briefs No 3Aust Cen in Vietnam
Australian Defender No 11
The vehicle I’m modelling is the one located at the AWM
All some help from a number of people in the reference of the vehicle.
Masks by Mal in the UK.

The vehicle I’m doing is 5B from 5 Troop C SQN 1 Armoured Regiment 1971.

So far cleaned up the Firestorm road wheels and started on the lower hull. Bit of detailing were needed. Happy how this kit falls together (so far)

Some more work achieved this weekend.
Working on the rear fuel cell. Firestorm, with a bit of detail done to it.Bottom access and drain plugs.
Also added the upper hull and started on the fenders. Added the brace that joins the fenders to the hull. Helps having the real thing down the road for reference.

That's coming along great. I was amazed by this Centurion when I visited the AWM and took a heap of photos. Feel free to use whatever you need. https://flic.kr/s/aHsmhHiRiL

I built mine almost OOB, so I'm interested in seeing how yours comes out with all the aftermarket additions.

G'day Brett,

Great work on the Cent. I have about 4 of these kits and I love them. I've built most of mine OOB ( Except major conversions), but have also used a few Firestorm products and can highly recommend the turret basket stowage set... Beautifully cast and drops straight in!

All the best for the rest of the build,

Cheers,

Matt

Looking very nice. There are a couple of guys in our base modellers' group that do armour and it's very interesting to see the different techniques. If I didn't have over 80 aircraft kits in the stash to do I could be tempted to have a go at a Tiger or Panther.

Thanks lads,

Plan to do some planes in 32 after this kit is done. I have a Sea Fury and Hunter to look at.
The kit fit is very good, no issues at this stage of the build.

Finished the rear fuel cell, fitted to the rear hull.
Also started on the fenders . Forgot to add voyager PE set to the list of aftermarket goodies. The firestorm stowage boxes fitted with no problems.
Also started on the vehicle stowage equipment.
So far , so good

Bit more done,
Added the front glacis plate made from firestorm. Thing just fell on. Then trimmed the front fenders as most RAAC Cent in Vietnam had them knock off or removed. Added the spare track link with PE and so aftermarket bolts/nuts.
So the hull is looking good (so far) there has to be issues somewhere along the build

Re: Aust Cent 1/35 Vietnam 1971 - turret done

Postby Brett Gibson » Tue Jul 24, 2018 8:10 pm

Lot of progress atm,
Turret construction done!
Firestorm provide the whole turret casted. So that part of the build was easy. Used the kit barrel. Firestorm bins were added. Rear turret basket was the kits frame with firestorm PE. I gave it a bit of damage as these vehicle were given a hard life. The search light was provide again my firestorm. Which had a nice cover on it. Scratch built the ammo liner mount. .30 cal ammo was provide by Arms Corps Models. 77 Set was provide by blackdog. I also add tarp poles as they were a local addition. The spotlight cable was also add. This was made using some soldiering wire. Back of the commanders sights was also done uses the same method. Finishing the turret with the rear cable out of the back of the turret.

Re: Aust Cent 1/35 Vietnam 1971 - construction completed

Postby Brett Gibson » Sun Aug 19, 2018 11:04 pm

Busy weekend, construction completed. The kit went together extremely well. AFV did a good job with the fit as well as the accuracy. I used the firestorm update resin kit, not issues as well. With both an excellent kit and aftermarket upgrade, I had very little scratch building to do for a change.
Next up is painting the boring OD. Going to use a technique I’ve seen a aircraft modeller uses on this site.
