1/48 RAAF Douglas A-20G - Work In Progress

Postby Sly712 » Thu Feb 15, 2018 1:18 pm

Hi All,

Been lurking for a little while.

So time to bite the bullet and put some of my work up. Didn't get any pictures of the cockpit before I closed her up.

Revell #04598 Douglas A-20G/J Havoc
Vector Douglas A-20G/J Havoc resin cockpit
Aber Browning M2 Aircraft .50 Cal Barrels
Quickboost Douglas A-20G Gun Barrels
Novascale N48018a Decals - "Hilda Shane" 22 Sqn 1944

So far, the build has been fairly painless. Except a builder error when closing the fuselage and realising I hadn't put the wing support in the fuselage!!!

Managed to squeeze some build time in today....between watching the Winter Olympics and the usual tasks the other half wants done

Some sanding and gap filling, used Tamiya White Putty and Mr Surfacer 1000.

Clear parts got a first dip in Pledge. Another one tomorrow 8-)

Some build for engines, cowlings and wheel nachelles. Hope the I will get a primer on later today.

It is quite a simple build, the gaps that I have had to fill are quite minor. You could do quite a nice OOB build.

In saying that, if I was to do it again, I would go the Quickboost A-20G Gun barrels and Engines Cowlings. The kit cowling require you to glue on a dozen or so fairings individually. The dreaded carpet monster was waiting for it's next meal, it went hungry in this occasion ;)

Also, while doing my research I discovered that the Novascale decals are essentially wrong, the biggest fault (IMHO) being the serial letters are wrong :( . In real life, A28-60 was coded DU-P not DU-D, why Novascale hasn't fixed such a glaring issue is beyond me.

I am tossing up if I just apply the decals as is or try and source correct lettering and roundels.

Quick update.

Canopies masked and temporarily tacked on. Tried preshading for the first time

Carpet monster got a feed....one of the clear oval pieces on the side of the fuselage went walkabout when fitting

Engines painted. Mr Hobby Burnt Iron, Tamiya Flat Aluminum dry brushing, Vallejo USAF Medium Grey and NATO Black. Oil and grime detailing to follow.
