Italeri 1/48 HC-21 Shawnee "Flying Banana" updated 30 Mar 18

Postby harvs73 » Mon Feb 20, 2017 6:44 pm

This is the start of an in box followed by build review of the new Italeri 1/48 HC-21 Shawnee. I will be adding decent photos in the next day or two of the parts, decals etc and then I shall start the build. The photos below are the initial images I took with my little camera when I opened the box (my big camera's battery ran out) and will be using my better camera for the parts images.

I have started to trial fit and glue some major parts with the Flying Banana now. A few disappointments:
- There is a small amount of flash on the kit despite it being a new tool kit.
- There are not positive positioning marks for the major components.
- There are very obvious ejection post marks in the fuselage interior that stick out and need to be filed down to ensure the floor fits properly.

These are not major problems but on a new tool kit they are not what I believe should be happening.

A slight advancement on the FLying Banana. The interior has been painted interior green as the images I have seen seem to show it is that colour rather than the grey as per the instructions. I think the floor does need ot be gray but not the walls or cockpit. I have to paint all the engine compartment Yellow Zinc Chromate and then look at the seats.

The tail fins are a tricky one as Italeri has not 'handed' them, just made them the same shape with holes on both halves of each rudder that you have to drill out depending on which side the rudder is going. They have also supplied two types of rudder, one large and one small, without any explanation of what aircraft, model or year they were used. I have checked out images on teh internet and I can't identify any of the smaller ones in used, though interestingly enough I have seen images where the rudders have been chopped off leaving a short stub on the fuselage.

Finally have started working on the Shawnee again. I have sprayed the engine compartment Tamiya XF-4 Yellow Green and started to put the bits together.

The basic components are well on the way to being done so it shouldn't be too far before I seal up the internals. The bulkheads in the tail don't fit properly as they have a gap on one side if you stick them against the other wall, I am not sure it's me or the kit......

The cockpit is also well on the way to being done. I have chosen to keep the cockpit interior green rather than grey and have the cargo floor grey with dark gray non-slip areas. The walls etc on the cargo bay will be interior green as per the images I have seen on the internet.

The engine bay is very basic and you could really have a ball doing detailing in there with cables, hoses etc. The PE mesh on the roof goes in a specific way so dry fit before gluing to ensure you don't stuff it up. With the engine the colours given by Italeri don't match the images I have seen on the internet of ther real thing so definitely look at walkarounds before you paint.

Hi David,

Not sure if it is just an illusion, but in the cockpit illustration of the instructions, the seats look strange. The back rests are short and the seat base long. It almost looks like the instructions tell you to glue them in wrong. The pilots will be pretty sore behind the knees if that is the case :P

Interesting subject!

Looking again, step one of the instructions looks right, but step 4 (which is what i first saw) looks wrong.

Very nice David.
How many models do you have on the go at the moment?

Troy, only 5 at the moment I think, well, ones on my bench but heaps packed away :-(

I have managed more work between the other kits and this one. The main components inside the fuselage are done now I just need to paint the troop seats, glue them in then seal it up.

The seats are now painted red and the fuselage is together. I never have good success in sealing up; the Italieri kits and this one is the same as I need to put on a bit of filler and rescribe panel lines and rivet holes. The rivet holes are rather stupid as it seems the person making the molds couldn't decide which side of the panel line the rivets were supposed to be on as they vary depending on which fuselage half you look at.

The first coat of green is now on the helicopter, is it too bright for an early Vietnam era aircraft?
