Italeri 1/48 Avenger FAA - completed 30 Dec 15

Postby harvs73 » Tue Sep 22, 2015 1:00 pm

This is the Italeri kit that I started some time ago and came to a halt prior to going overseas. It is now on the go with the five Mustang III's I am doing. I have added the Eduard PE to the cockpit and will be doing the detail painting in the next few days. The photo below is a size comparison to the Mustang.

Hi David
I have a couple of RN FAA Avengers to do and am wondering what you plan to use for the Observer's seat immediately behind the pilot. I am having trouble finding any reference pictures of the Observer's station.
Thanks for any advice you can provide.
Cheers
Shaun

Shaun, at the moment I am unsure on what I am going to do about that area, I may even leave it as is. I have seen various thoughts on what to do but due to the lack of information they are all just conjecture. The best thought I have seen is to add a seat and a map reading board and leave it at that.

I did a bit more work on the internals last night and have more painting to do as well as the tail wheel and associated bulkheads. I don't think I am going to do too much detailing on this one as the majority of the internals in the rear area can't be seen once it is buttoned up.

In an attempt to combat the extra position in the FAA Tarpon I have thought of this easy and rather inelegant way to fix the problem. I have heaps of Mustang seats sitting around thanks to my Mustang III project so I figure I can add one of those and a map board in the middle area it should be a relatively simple fix. I reckon it would more likely be a folding map board but a fixed one will do for the moment.

This is my trial fit that shows I may need to trim down the seat and fit the map board in there a little off to one side.

That Observer spot looks great David.

I seem to recall somewhere that the Italeri kit and its predecessor (Accurate Miniatures?) have an extra seat on the sprues that is not called up in the instructions, which may be an option for the Observer's seat.
Did you find one?

Considering the lack of detail that can be seen once the fuselage is together I reckon the internals of the Avenger are done now. I added the seat with PE seat belt and a small map bench in the second cockpit.

I admit it, I have finally wimped out on the idea of masking the Avenger/Tarpons canopy and I have bought some pre cut masks. I have two separate types of masks that I am going to try on different models, one is the Montex 'Mini Mask' for just the canopies and the other is the Montex 'Super Mask' that gives the canopy masks as well as unit and national markings for a US and a NZ Avenger.

The turret has been started with the 'Mini Mask' as I plan on using decals for the acft markings.
