ICM 1/48 Mustang III 3 and 450 SQN RAAF - updated 15 May 16

Postby harvs73 » Thu Sep 10, 2015 4:38 pm

I am finaly getting around to making the four ICM kits using the Red Roo models 'Away Team Pt1' and 3 SQN RAAF set containing the Loon resin fuselage. I am starting on two of them and will shortly be starting the other two so I don't clog up the limited working space I have at the moment (wife has taken over my workbench while I was overseas).

The PE is the Eduard cockpit update set that has the instrument panel, side panels and seat belts. The pre-coloured etch is good except for the colour that Eduard uses as interior green. I did not use all the PE supplied as some of it annoys me and the rest will not be seen and is too fiddly.

The ICM kits are not too bad to use but there are numerous casting flaws eg there is only a hole for one side leg to go in to, the other does not appear to be cast at all. The pilot seat is the very early seat and not really applicable for what was in the 3 SQN acft (I believe) but I was not going to buy AM sets or scratch build the multiple seats needed.

I believe I have used the incorrect exhaust on one of the aircraft but it is too late to fix it as the correct one judging by the images is the one I have shown in the first image with the ling exhaust pipes. I used the later exhaust that has the short pipes on one of them when it should be the long pipes. The ICM Mustang III kit comes with only the long exhaust pipes which I think are the right ones while the P-51C kits come with both long and short exhausts.

I have been reading up on the colours for the wheel wells and I am now confused as I have seen at least three different possibilities so I am sticking with the yellow zinc colour rather than silver or interior green with yellow zinc main spar.

On both the original ICM kit (Tamiya copy apparently) and the Loon fuselage there is a gap on one side of the engine cowling when it is put on the fuselage. On one of the kits it is a big enough gap to use some card while on the Loon fuselage it is too small for card so I have just used filler.

Looks nice. I have an ICM P-51D to do in a similar theme. Red Roo decal set too, I think ;) .

I have now got three of the kits close to painting stage with one more to build. The image below shows why I like the Eduard PE sets, the instrument panels!

Yeah, I love that PE too. It gives you such a realistic effect :) .

Time for a production line paint job. A coat of Mr Surfacer then painting the yellow tips followed by the black blade.

Wow production run alright. The ICM kits are reportably knockoffs of the Tamiya kit. Your thoughts?

Calum, they are indeed a knock off of the Tamiya kits, complete with inaccuracies, unfortunately they also have casting problems ie short shot or dimples in the plastic. The later kits are better than the earlier ones but still suffer problems. These kits have flash as well as twists in the fuselage in two of them and one half of the fuselages is slightly shorter than the other.

In saying that, if you put in the little bit of extra work they turn out great eg the P-51D below done as a RAAF TT Mustang using the Red Roo update set.

The sky theatre bands are now airbrushed on and the prop hubs are painted red and drying. As soon as the paint dries I will start the masking then commence the camouflage.

Yet again, I am in awe of how 'efficiently' some people are able to use their build time! I'd have been lucky to get the cockpits done for all five in the same period, hahaha... Maybe I should change my nick on here to GlacierZaggy? But they look great Harvs...

So the ICM/Tamiya kit, how's it shape up next to the 1/48 Hasegawa Mustangs? I have the 'Nose Art' kit here (that I bought when the Hase P-51's were BRAND NEW... Long time ago now) that has recently popped up as a potential 'something different' build, with the intention of making it a camo'd 3SQN P-51K - probably take me a year, BUT ATM, that is a quicky.... Unlike that frikken Machine, Troy! ;)

Phase two of the paint job is complete. The undersides were done then the masking for the topsides done and painted. The models are just waiting for me to get the energy to mask the camouflage patterns which are mostly different on each aircraft.
