After priming, more putty & sanding needed here.

Rather than using my usual Model Master or Tamiya spraycan primer, I decided to try the Model Master primer from a jar again thru my airbrush. Last time, I used it with Tamiya enamel thinner and it was not very robust. This time I've used the Testors thinner & it seems to work much better.

Onto the main painting. I wanted to try a new technique - either salt chipping or hairspray chipping - to get the heavy chipped look these aircraft had. After watching a few vids, the hairspray option seemed the easiest. I tried it on a spare wing which went OK, and now have started it on the model. I think it has to be done in small stages so that everything does not dry to the extent where the black/grey topcoat will not chip/rub off easily. I also tried a little mottling of topcoat through a piece of scouring pad, but need to find some foam padding which I think will give a better spray pattern.

Basic primer

Light coat of Alclad duraluminium

Then airbrush on decanted hairspray, then Tamiya flat black, a little flat blue, spray some lighter greys through scouring cloth for mottling, then using a coarse wet paintbrush & cocktail stick rub off some of the black/greys so the silver(ish) shows through. Fabric areas were then sprayed a slightly lighter black/grey.

It will all have to be sealed with clearcoat. I'm going to airbrush on the roundels, but probably not the larger code letters (too many tricky curves). And the wing camo pattern in lighter grey, which will also have to be chipped a little, but less than the black as it was added after so newer I believe?

Also intend to do a salt stain wash, exhaust stains, some oil washes perhaps. Rust stains on fuselage.

It needs to look really battered.
