HMAS Sydney III (Vung Tau Ferry) - LCM(3)s ...

Postby jindivik33 » Wed Apr 09, 2014 12:19 pm

Ahoy again, shipmates

I was sure that I had an image or two of the Ferry's LCM(3)s, both colour and B&W, that showed the numbering used on the landing craft.

If memory serves me correctly (and it quite often doesn't these days), the LCM(3)s were originally numbered 1 to 6 (white on black?) on the coxswain's cabin, then on the stern but in later trips to Vung Tau, they carried both the ship's number p214 as well as the individual LCM(3) number in white outlined in black.

Can anyone assist with clarification, please?

Cheers

I’ve managed to find an image of HMAS Sydney III from 1970 which shows the LCM(3)s carried the ship’s number (p214) on the stern together with the individual LCM(3) number. White letter and numerals outlined in black. Note that the LCM(3)s are grey with a black waterline:

A B&W image appears to show the same letter/numeral configuration:

A 1971 image shows the letter/numeral combination but in this case the letter “P” is the same size as the numerals “214/”. I can but assume that the individual LCM number followed the forward slash:

A 1967 B&W image shows the LCM(3)s in overall grey with a small black numeral/letter combination. It apperas to be something like “A.B. 760”?:

And I finally found an image of the white numeral on a black background on the coxswain’s cabin on one of Sydney’s LCM(3)s:

See Ship's Colour thread below, Brad, which encapsulates my plans for the Ferry.

I might be too late to buy into this conversation but here goes.

The landing craft used by HMAS SYDNEY weren't LCM-3s but LCM-6s. An LCM-6 is a lengthened LCM-3. A 6 is 6 feet longer than a 3 so it is easy to confuse the two.

Bugger, Gordon. 6 feet longer, huh? Now I'm wondering - using 1/350 scale LCM-3s on a 1/400 scale HMAS Sydney III, will they pass as LCM-6s?? ;)

What’s 6 feet in 1/400 scale? Roughly 0.18 of an inch.

Put another way, the LCM(3) was 50 feet long (1524cm) and the LCM(6) was 56.2 feet long (roughly 1707cm), a difference of 83cm. What's 83cm in 1/400 scale? Roughly 0.2cm.

I'll tell people that they are actually LCM-6s ... I think I can get away with that :D

Cheers

Actually I make it 4.57mm. 0.18in is correct. The difference is 183cm not 83cm. It is significant @ 1/400 but it's your model and your decision.

Thanks, Gordon. Math was never my forte. Short of having to scratchbuild the LCM(6) in 1/400 scale, I think I'll stick with the after-market 1/350 LCM(3) ... Lazy? Hell yeah.
