RAN Ship's Colour Question ...

Postby jindivik33 » Wed Feb 19, 2014 7:08 am

Ahoy shipmates

Could a learned RAN scholar tell me what Grey was being used by the RAN in the late 60s and early 70s to paint their vessels?

I'm specifically thinking of HMAS Melbourne (the carrier) and HMAS Sydney (the fast troop ship).

Advice on a modelling paint equivalent would also be appreciated. As you may have gathered from my earlier post regarding the aircraft lifts, this is my first foray into a maritime subject and I'm a complete novice in this area.

All advice appreciated.

Cheers

G'Day Roger,

We used shipside (coloquial name) oficially known as storm grey (AS2700 N42) which was the green tinted grey still used until the new colour change is finalised over the next couple of years. I had some which unfortunately disapeared. However before I lost it I went to Bunnings and managed to get a match in flat acrylic Which I will put a clear coat over when used. If it helps, the code on the can is:

B 1Y 9N C 0Y 56N D 0Y 11N

Used a base of taubmans flat white. Whish I got the semi-gloss, oh well.....

It looks too dark in the can, but I painted a small LCM with it and after a semi-gloss clear coat, it was a perfect match for a 1/700 DDG I did in the original paint.

Hope this works. If not, let me know and I will try to produce a chip on plastic card for you and send it on so they can do a colour match for you.

The below link shows N42, although it appears a bit too dark on my screen.

Thanks very much for the detailed information and the "recipe" for Storm Grey. I've got a Bunnings just down the road so I'll give it a go using semi-gloss acrylic as the base ... wish me luck.

N2 does look very dark on the screen from the link you provided. We'll see what the "recipe" looks like in the can, proof of the pudding so to speak ;)

One's gotta love AMI in getting the good oil!

Cheers

Good luck with it Roger. Remember, it looks dark in the can, dries to the correct shade though.
