Tamiya 1/48 Spirfire Vb, BP*H, 457 SQN completed 21 Apr 13

Postby harvs73 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 4:57 pm

This is another of the quick builds I am doing, I started in the morning and got to this stage at the end of the day.

One of the odd things was that the upper wing panels on the kit were short shot and missing some plastic from the trailing edge. I fixed this with some putty and sanding off.

I am using the Red Roo 'Away Team Part 2' sheets as reviewed on AMI:

I have done a bit more on the Spitfire, in this case airbrushing it with Humbrol paints (as usual). I gave it a base coat of the gray then masked it off with paper mask and a bit of Tamiya tape for those hard to get to areas. The plan is to decal it up then apply a One Go layer prior to weathering it. I am thinking of trying a bit more weathering than IO normally do for these but am unsure if I will do the post shading like the Corsair.

Looking pretty nice so far. My Son recently built one of these for a Schoolteacher & we compared it to the ICM Mk. VIII I built straight after it. Our "Verdict" was that the Tamiya kit went together much better but that the ICM had far more detail & was cheaper with it.

PS: nice Whirlwind in the background. What scale?

I tend to agree that the Tamiya kit goes together better than the ICM. The ICM is much more accurate I reckon but a pain to build at times and you need to replace too many things thus making it more expensive than Tamiya.

The Whirlwind is the Special Hobby 1/72 kit that unfortunately my daughter attacked with red paint. It joined my shelf of doom after I noticed the twist in the tail that needs to be fixed and I have yet to have the energy to attack it.

OK, except that I didn't replace anything on my ICM. The only thing would've been the decals, which were awful. Some PE in the cockpit probably would've been nice, but that's all.

The decals are on but I had a bad case of silvering on a number of them. I used my normal fixer for them and it still didn't get them all, I even had the paint crinkle on the decal in front of the cockpit - luckily I managed to save it so far. After decal went on and a clear coat over the top I dry-brushed some silver paint on in various areas. I used Tamiya decals for the stencils and regretted it as they must have been old as some of them disintegrated after they hit the warm water.

I have yet to finish the painting and add all the antenna etc, once that is done it will be complete.

Looks great. That Tamiya kit does build up into a lovely plane, doesn't it? One of my pet hates is decals that perform poorly. My 12yo built an apparently new Italeri helicopter kit where the decals just "exploded" as soon as they hit water. You should've seen his face. Fortunately we had plenty of spares to save the situation with. It has influenced our kit choices since then too, with Italeri missing out. I'm not that impressed with ICM's either, only having a 50/50 record with them too.

Calum, you should know better by now - if someone is a New Zealander and does good they are automatically Australian :-)

RAAFBrat, I don't even bother using ICM or older Academy decals these days due to them being rubbish. The ICM ones may have changed but I prefer to get decent aftermarket ones just in case. The Tamiya ones I used I think were just old rather than bad.

We haven't had any drama with Academy decals yet, but I do have an oldish Academy 1/48 F-III to do yet  .
