1/48 P-51 Mustang III FB224/OK-F 450 SQN updated 13 Apr

This is another quick build as I am using the Pegasus 1/48 P-51B Mustang kit. Added to the kit will be decals from the Red Roo 'The Away Team Pt 1'. I am not going to bother with internals as the kit has no real interior so I am concentrating on the exterior like I did with the Corsair I in the FAA GB. The link below is to the decals I am using for this build:

I started the build this morning and have essentially finished the majority of the gluing and filling as there are very few parts in the kit.

More advancement, base coats down, masked and airbrushed with Humbrol paints representing the ANA colours. I think I need to redo the underside as it should be ANA 602 but I did it in the same gray as the Spit Vb. I believe is should be more along the line of Light Gull Gray (Hu 129) than what I have done it in. I have yet to mask off and airbrush the OD section in front of the cockpit, this will be done when it is cured enough to mask. This one I plan to do heaps of weathering as it was a beaten up and worn acft according to the images and Red Roo instructions.

Nice so far. My 14yo Son is part-way through a 1/24 P-51D (RAAF - Italy) & my 12yo boy is nearly finished a 1/72 P-51B - USAF "Redtails". Nice planes :) .

Olive Drab is down after masking off the cowl area. It looks very light in the image but the OD is the same one as I used on the Corsair I. In this image I have masked off the tail in preparation for airbrushing the light blue on the tail. Once this is done I plan to do several coats of One Go in an effort to stop silvering as I had on the Vb Spitfire.

RAAFBrat, Mustangs are good :-) It's good to see your boys are making models as well, I hope we will see the images when complete.

The 12yo's last effort ($7.00 Flying Tiger) was his best so far but the Mustang is shaping up nicely. He put a lot of work into the teensy 1/72 cockpit of this one.The 14yo's superkit is coming along slowly, but well. He's held up atm as he wants to light up the inst. panel & wingtip lights. We need to get back out to the elec. shop & get a couple more mini globes (one blew) before I can solder it all up for him.

Mini globes or LED's? I have seen some good results with painted LED's.

Mini globes painted. They were $1.20 ea vs $5.00 ea for coloured LED's. He bought 3 globes & 2 LED's only to have one of the LED's "not function" & one of the globes blow on the 3rd test. We were running 3 volts through 1.5v globes though :) . The plan is to run 3 of those globes on the same circuit: Batt-wingtip-inst./panel-wingtip-batt. Just need to get back out to that shop. I might get a chance mid-week after work.
