OZCONV4820 OzMods 1/48 Vultee Vengeance update

Postby harvs73 » Tue Apr 16, 2013 9:51 pm

I have just received the 1/48 Vengeance update set for the AZ Models Vengeance. I will start off by posting images of the components and over the next few days I will endeavor to do a review on them with images of the original aircraft and the AZ Model kit.

The instructions: These are supplied on a CD as a PDF and are pretty much complete for the construction but do suggest you visit the walkaround by Danni Lang here on AMI for all the smaller detail.

The fuselage components are a vast improvement over the kit parts. The interior is much improved in detail and finesse with the cockpit floor/bomb bay having a much more positive location that the AZ model. The panel lines and other details are much finer and better looking with the AZ. The interior, whilst improved, is not complete and can use a addition of many small details to finish it off. This is not surprising as even the most expensive update set misses small components that are extremely hard to do in resin.

To start with, here are some images of the fuselage:

Here is the engine cowl and components. One of the main criticisms of the AZ kit was that they failed to get the cross section of the aircraft correct as the kit was to squared off. This update set definitely fixes that problem.

I have compared the Az cowl ring to the two supplied components from OzMods and the OzMods ones are much better formed and rounded. They appear to fit much better than the original components and won't require as much fitting as I found I had to do originally.

That's certainly a clear improvement, though it almost looks like it could be said that the AZ kit is an update for the OzMods set :)

It's a shame that a number of kits being produced at the moment get these sorts of things wrong that might be considered not that big a deal but significantly affect the look of the aircraft. The intakes on the Trumpeter F-100s and the hobby Boss A-7s spring to mind as well.

Wings, undercarriage and not much else! The sad part is that you have to buy the expensive kit to discard most of it.

Interesting to see whats been done with this one. The bomb bay and engine details are very nice.
I did have concerns about the accuracy of the finished product having been on the other end of the tape measure when
it was run over EZ triple 9 but it appears to be ok. The few minor issues I can see are purely nit picking.

Interesting to note on one of the other well known sites infested with Americans that Dannielle's review is now considered to be
innaccurate and sucking up to the manufacturer. At least they slagged off every other review as well.

Yeah, I saw that one. I wonder what exactly they want in a review - "this is a POS so throw it in the bin!!!". It is a piece of plastic that when care is taken with it can be turned into a nice looking model. It just astounds me that so many people will put hundreds of $$$ into PE and resin sets no matter how good a kit is then slag off a different kit for not being 'accurate'. I think that some of the problem is that they do not know what the word 'polite' is, you can say a model is not the best without being abusive - something that a fair few people on the internet have forgotten.

But I reckon the base kit, whilst inaccurate and rough, turned out ok.
