ICM 1/48 Do 17Z-7 Night fighter in box review

Postby harvs73 » Sun Apr 15, 2018 10:53 am

This is the recently released kit from ICM as a follow up in the series of Do-17's they have in their line up. The Do-17, commonly called the 'flying pencil', was designed in the early 1930's with the idea to fly very fast to outrun the opposition fighters. With it's combat debut in the Spanish Civil war this may have been achieved but when it went up against more modern aircraft it fell short. The Do 17Z was the most produced variant and was a result of the experiences of the Spanish Civil War. After bomber production ended in 1940 the aircraft was redesigned in to a night fighter by adding a 'gun nose' and fitted with one 20 mm MG FF cannon and three 7.92 mm (.312 in) MG 17 machine guns as well as various other modifications to improve it. This is the first ICM kit that I have looked at apart from the rip offs of the P-51's and the Spitfires, to say this is a vast improvement over those is an understatement! The instruction booklet is very well printed and it looks easy to understand to me. The amount of extra parts included on this kit shows the use that ICM is getting out of each sprue. They give you colour call outs from Tamiya and Revell so you will either have to use those or find the conversions for them unless you have the knowledge to hunt down the 'correct' colour.

The trade mark wings are very nice and have fine panel lines that suit it well. I have seen complaints on the odd review that there are no rivets but you can either put them on yourself or just work with what is there.

As you can see, the panel lines are very fine and should come up nicely when weathered in some way.

This is the wheel well for the main undercarriage. The undercarriage is put together from multiple pieces to form a cell around this area.

The detail on the control surfaces is nice and not too overboard for the scale.

A little detail of the various sprues. The kit provides another nose for the use on this model.

The fuselage is not too bad at all with minimal ejection post marks and none that I can see that would be seen to easily when the kit is completed. The components for the cockpit appear to make a nicely detailed area out of the box but of course you can always use PE or other after market items it improve it if you wish.

The decals cover two aircraft form the same Squadron:
- Dornier Do 17Z-7 of I./NJG2, "R4-HK" based in Giltze-Rijen in the Autumn of 1940; and
- Dornier Do 17Z-7 of I./NJG2, "R4-FK" of the same SQN.

As for colour scheme, as Henry Ford said - you can have any colour you want as long as it is black!

I plan on trying out various techniques to replicate the black scheme as I won't be painting in black but more likely dark grays in various hues.
