Tamya USS Missouri 'circa 1991'

Postby ixgr1 » Fri May 24, 2013 11:20 pm

I had trepidation in getting this kit in thinking 'oh hello - a reboxing of the USS New Jersy'. Not the case !

I have wanted to do a modernised Missouri since the 'MightyMo' visited Sydney in '86. As a result I have had three Tamya 'Iowa's' - all of which have changed hands when the progect became to daunting.............

This version from Tamya is quite a bit different. I was aware of the little extras that update the core New Jersey kit, but the effort of his kit goes beyond what I would have expected.
For those not familier with the subject it is an enhanced modern Iowa class 1940's Battleship
But with the inclution not only of new radar domes and subdued pennant number (what I was only expecting); there is a new opened bridge structure and rear missile deck unique to the Missouri, the main mast has been re-designed and even a funnel casing is new. A photo etch sheet that (thankfully) replaces the oversized helo nets, contains lots of great stuff including two radar sets a new stern wall for the supersructure and I believed the WWII surrender placard for the SBD 1/4. The whole rear deck has been redesigned for the Missouri's armored flight deck with tie-downs correctly all up and around the rear turret. And even a small squadron of UAV's are included, With their radio set fwd of the flight deck !
There are many other detail changes that I didn't notice too well in my quick peek prior to a stash shove. But I did notice a lot more decals than I expected, like detail to individual turrets and alternate hi-vis pennant numbers.

Well done to Tamya for NOT producing just a face-lift to this kit ! :D
( and Brenton @ Mr Toys Springwood has 5 left at $119 - cheaper than shipping it from Lucky Model !!!!)

forgot to say;

As well as the reprinted instructions (no daggy inserts); we get a full size coloured top and side profile print with detail notes and a Printed Resource Material booklet on the evolution of BB-63.

The only thing missing is perhaps some PE railings - but we can't have it all ?
I am very pleased with what Mr Tamya has done here, great job !

"BB"...now does that stand for "Badass Battleship"? I'd live to do this but I think it's a retirement time kinda model. I bought the USS Enterprise not so long ago and if I was to get all the aftermarket for it I'm looking at a total project cost well over the $600 total mark!! Not to mention the time and space required and mind numbing research required to get it right. And I thought building accurate Aussie aircraft was difficult.

I actually have just completed this for the Enterprise ( I am attempting a refitt of my original to a 2010 version, still ment a clone kit of the original had to be got !!)- LOT of stuff to get...... and your not wrong. I have gone over $600 mark with one weapons system still yet to get -freaking MAJOR investment !

and yes, retirement models/engineered mid-life crisis models these definatly are !

I bought the RMS Titanic over 10yrs ago..I'm still scared to even look at the instructions, especially living in a rental at the moment.
My biggest peeve with the carriers I have at the moment is trying to source squadron decals for 1/350th and 1/750-1/800 scale kits. The other hard thing is trying to figure out air wings for each carrier. I have a naval weapons kit in 1/800 from Pit Road but the Nimitz & Kittyhawk kits I have are from the early 60's air wings and its hard just trying to research the air wings let alone the armaments.

There are two good forums I found for ships,I'll look up the names again because they're saved on my laptop and post them here. Guys on there are a wealth of knowledge and spare parts ;)

We need some more ships here so when you make it by all means post images! In fact, why not post some images of the kit here as well?
