First Airbrush- Need Help!

Postby Jrog » Thu May 15, 2014 8:46 am

Hey guys,

I've finally decided to get an airbrush and need a little help deciding between a few models. I'm looking to get something relatively sturdy and mid range as I don't want to spend a fortune. I've been looking at the Iwata Neo ($70 on ebay), the Badger Patriot 105, ($115) or the Iwata Eclipse HP-CS ($128). I'll be doing armour models from 1/56th up to 1/35 and aircraft mostly in the 1/48th scale.

As for the compressor I'm looking at a cheapie on ebay, the reviews seem good.

Any recommendations on other airbrushes/compressors?

Much appreciated,
Jacques

Hi Jacques,
I've recently gone through this excercise recently too.

My advice would be to buy the best double-action airbrush you can afford (any of the brand name ones you mention would be terrific - I wanted an Iwata but couldn't justify the $$$, but I've been very happy with my $80 Sparmax DH-103 so far), and any half-decent compressor so long as it has an air tank, regulator and water trap.

G'day Jacque,
I'm no kind of expert on airbrushes... pretty much a beginner by the standards on this forum. But I recently upgraded from my own entry level airbrush, a Thayer & Chandler Vega 2000. I really liked that airbrush and it did everything I wanted it to do but then I bought an Iwata Eclipse HC-S and WOW... the difference is chalk & cheese.

I can't comment on how it compares to the other brushes you mentioned but I know now why they get such great reviews. Its so much more a 'precision instrument' than my Vega (which now I've tried the HP-CS, I've given to one of my daughters as a 'learner' airbrush for her art). It has a .35mm tip which does great fine line work as well as having enough coverage for full coats on models with no worries. It's really versatile.

Purely because of how much I love the HP-CS I bought an HP-B+ for super-fine work but with the HP-CS its not really necessary for modelling.

Cheers, Tony

Thanks for the advice guys!

I think I'll suck it up and get the Iwata Hp-cs as it seems to be the safe bet.

G'day again Jacques,

further to the hp-cs, I've bought from here before....

http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Iwata-Eclips ... 417e92199a

A bit pricey but I've had good advice & after sales service & they're local.

I've been watching this seller because that's a great price!

If I wasn't spending all my money on 1/48 Hornets I'd give them a try!

Another vote here for the Eclipse hp-cs, got one a few months ago after using a cheap Chinese single action for years, the difference is astounding, once you try the Iwata, you will never want another!!

1/48 Revell Spitfire mkII (Experimenting with technique on this cheap build)
1/48 Tamiya F4U-1D Corsair
