Flaky Exhaust Cans

A mate of mine told me this trick to get the appearance of Flaking Rust on Mufflers mainly on tanks. You can use it on aircraft, but you have to control the Flakes. Meaning, one coat only so as to get a slight crinkle.
This only works on Acrylic Paints such as Gunze Sanyo or any other water based paint.
I use their Exhaust Red Brown colour and put a drop the size of a 10c piece in a Milk Top Lid. Next dip your brush in some Metho, then in the paint and lay it on. The Metho will dry quickly and the surface will flake/crack up. If you want different colours, add a drop of White or Yellow or Black. Not all at once otherwise you will not be able to control the colour.
You will need to practice a few times to get the colour you like. I have a liking for darker shades as they depict the colours of Rust that have been on the can for a long time.
See how you go.
