starting from scratch - advice apreciated

Postby Homerlovesbeer » Sun Feb 01, 2015 9:06 pm

Hi guys,

I hope you guys can help me out. I haven't touched a model for 20 years and have decided to have another go at it.

So...

I will be needing to buy everything from scratch. I was thinking about buying Mr Hobby or Mr Color paints as I've read lots of good things about them but i have no idea whether to go water based with Mr Hobby or thinner based with Mr Colour.

I'll be building aircraft and cars.

What are thoughts on this?

I'll also need to buy a compressor and and airbrush but I've never really used an airbrush before and don't really have a clue what to buy or look for. What do I need to look for and what will i need to spend?

What other "must have" items should I get? I was thinking about using Tamiya extra thin for glue.

Primers and thinner suggestions?
Cleaning solutions?
Brushes?
Sanding and scribing tools?
Clear coats? Washes?

And where does the money end??

Hobby knife with a good supply of spare blades, Tamiya take in 6, 10 and 18mm, a decent set of sprue cutters, sanding sticks/paper, a variety of different sized and shaped brushes, a thinner matched to the paint you choose, cotton swabs and a variety of glues. Tame extra thin is good. I use it a lot, but Superglue is needed if you want to work with PE.

For a beginner a cheeper duel action airbrush and small compressor will do you> have a look on eBay at the ones they sell for airbrushing finger nails. You should be able to get a combo for a decent enough price. That should be enough to get you started. don't over stretch on your early builds and stick to a simple project at first. Try to add one new skill and tool to each build. YouTube is your friend. Heaps of tutorial videos there to teach you almost anything you need to know.

What Troy said but I keep it even simpler. Sticky tape or insulation tape rather than Tamiya tape (it's expensive ;) ), Tamiya acrylic paints thinned with Metho & Revell model glue & Aquadhere for glues. Maybe a bottle of decal-softener - I use Tamiya "Mark-Set".
My airbrush is a little Makeup/Cake Deco set I got off EBay for $60.00 - it does the job well I think. Keep it simple to start with & go from there. Good luck! :)

Tamiya tape can be bought in bulk on eBay for the same price as one roll here in OZ.

The Gunze Mr Hobby paints are nice and easy to use though the range is getting harder to find in the local shops, apparently the imported has stopped bringing it into the country. The only stockist here in Canberra is selling what's left of their stock at 20% off to empty the rack since they can't get any more.

You might want to try for a range that is available locally, where are you located?

I use Lifecolor, though some people have difficulty in shooting it, second choice is Tamiya, then Gunze. All are acrylic.

I like Lifecolor because they have all the FS paint numbers I use a lot. Australian and US Aircraft and armored vehicle colors.
