FOD covers and engine bungs.

Postby DesTROYer » Sat Jan 24, 2015 8:56 am

I'm looking for ideas on how to make up the engine exhaust FOD covers/bungs for my Canberra, as seen below.

The intakes were pretty straight forward, but making the rear covers are making me scratch my head. I want to make them non permanent, so gluing and painting cling wrap on, in not an option. Thought about foil, but will it hold the paint without it cracking and flaking off.

What about tissue paper? Wet, mould, let dry & paint? Works well for simulated canvas tarps.

I used tin foil covered in tissue paper. I found the tissue paper on its own hard to work with when wet (kept poking holes in it)and when dry it was brittle.

I placed the foil over the intakes and exhausts, then placed the tissue paper over the foil and using a mixture of white glue and water dampened the tissue. When dry remove, trim to the size you want and paint.

They look great Calum.
I wasn't having much luck with the tissue either so I tried Tamiya tape and got some good results. I like your idea a lot though so I'm going to give it a go. Thanks.

The other trick with tissue is to soak it with Aquadhere (white glue). Mould to shape, let dry then paint. That's what my boy did with his diorama. Tarp in the front corner & the muzzle cover.

Cheers. Once I've cleaned this up, I plan to try that for the cloth roof on the Canberra's sunshade.
