Compressor issues

Postby DesTROYer » Sat Feb 11, 2017 12:41 pm

I've just been out putting some colour down on the APC, and my main spraying compressor has decided it's not going to hold pressure and keeps running. While sufficient pressure is there to spray when it is running, it's not an ideal situation and I'll have to try and fix it or replace it. I have my bigger shop compressor I can use in the mean time, but when that thing does fire up, I have been known to jump and spill paint.

I can't hear or feel a leak, so does anyone have any other ideas on what could be causing it?

What type of compressor Troy? Sounds like a perished or split diaphragm.

If there's no external leak, it must be internal. Concur with Rod but it may also have done a check valve or worn rings/piston(s). Sounds like disassembly is in order.

It's a middle of the road one I got on eBay a few years back, I have the model No. in the office and I'll do a search on it for spare parts later this evening. A diaphragm sounds to be a likely suspect. I managed to get 95% of the painting I wanted to do done with it today. When I went to hook up my bigger compressor I found I have misplaced the adaptor somewhere. I'll have to get another one before I can spray any future on the APC.

It's the HSENG AS18B Quite a common series of compressor. Looking for parts now, but not much out there. A replacement is around $150 at BNA

I made mine from an old fridge compressor. The tank's an old fire extinguisher bottle. Cost me about $40 for the pressure switch and adaptors and is as quiet as a fridge when it runs.

I'm going to take it around to the old mans to pull apart and take a squiz tomorrow morning before we head out to lunch. If it's not fixable, I'll treat myself a new one as a birthday present.

Dismantled, cleaned and tested the compressor and found that the pressure switch has failed. Give it a tap with the screw driver and it stops like it should. Using the part No. on the item, I've tracked a replacement part down on eBay Malaysia, at a very reasonable price, but currently they do not have shipping to OZ. I have sent an email and hopefully they get back to me with a yes and shipping price tomorrow. It will be very easy to fix with the correct part, and I will be able to put the $100 Mum and dad gave me for my birthday towards some other tools or a kit. Win win.

Runway 13 (Canberra) sells the AS13B. Give Peter Shum a call on 0419 228 287, they may stock spares... Worth a shot!
