RAAF F4 painting

Postby Doc59 » Tue Mar 13, 2018 8:31 pm

Building the 1/48 Italeri RAAF phantom (and realising why you blokes didn't think much of them) couple of questions about painting that I couldn't find searching. I want to paint inboard of the engine intakes/splitter plates before fitting and need advice as to where the demarcation is between the grey and camo. Looks like the lower side of the ramp between the intakes and the fuselage is grey, so did that carry on down to the underside or was there camo in between. Hope that makes sense? Last question for now but probably more to come, what colour matches whatever the RAAF used on the bare part of the horizontal tailplanes

Thanks for that. Robert I had forgotten about that site, has some good pics. Troy, I had seen your pics before but just had a closer look at one of the intakes and it shows what I was after. As for the tailplanes, looks like really dark grey or even black on the upper surface and lighter grey on the lower to my eyes?

Doc,

Have you had a look in the F4 gallery on this site? Many questions can be answered for you here.

Thanks Andrew, have had a look at that and some is helpful as I go. Horizontal tailplane/stabs (what were they called on Phantoms?) seems to be unclear so I'm just going to eye match to pics from the internet probably using paint I already have.

G'day Doc, the stabilators are bare titanium (same as the lower aft fuselage section behind the exhaust cans, for heat-resistance) from the roots out to almost halfway, and then the camo colours over the composite from there to the tip.

The "Black" you are seeing is just reflections off the unpainted titanium areas, the different tones are due to differing hardnesses of the titanium, ie tougher at the pivot attachment.
Thank God for the internet, otherwise I'd NEVER know that EVERY kit I've ever bought is total garbage!

Thanks DDGboy, the bare titanium makes sense for the underside of the stabilators on RAAF Phantoms and on pics of USAF upper surface but all the pics of ours definately have a darker upper surface. Found an old post here from 2013 where Andrew mentions it was a purplish colour protective coating. I'm not that fussy and my models aren't in the same league as most here so I'm just going to wing it and paint the lower surface bare metal and the upper dark grey to black. If it looks like a RAAF Phantom from across the room I'll be happy.

Well there you go, went back through some of the linked pics and yes, there is a uniform dark coating (at least on top), all these years looking at RAAF Phantom II's and I guess seeing what I expected to see, not what was actually there!

I've never seen that on any other Phantoms, and gone when they went back to the US, must have been specific to RAAF?

From what I understand it is a heat protectant covering. On some images I've seen like the one attached you can see it peeling in places. I guess when it got too bad the surface finishers removed the rest.

FWIW, I used Model Master gunmetal to replicate this.
