HMAS Sydney III aka 'The Vung Tau Ferry'

Postby jindivik33 » Thu Mar 01, 2018 6:40 pm

Do any maritime modelling members have good quality images or plans of the davits of HMAS Sydney III for her LCM6s? I have the 1/400 Heller HMS Colossus to convert into the Vung Tau Ferry.

At 1/400 scale, I'm thinking that I'll need to replicate the davits in brass rod as I'm not sure that plastic rod will support the weight of the resin LCMs. But then, who makes brass rod that thin?

Any and all help would be appreciated.

I have the same kit to one day do the Melbourne, so I’ll be interested in seeing your build.

To answer your question, you might be able to give piano wire a go. It comes in various gauges and is fairily stiff.

I think John Loughman would've had good details of those for his 1/72 build, now at the Vietnam Veterans' Museum on Phillip Island. I'm not likely to go down there for a while but Haydn may be able to grab some photos.

Callum McDonald is very helpful with all things RAN related.

Good to see you're getting some modelling in.
I'm not older than dirt, but I do remember when it was new.

Many thanks, David. I'd forgotten about John Loughman's superb 1/72 scale build of 'The Ferry'. Do you have John's and Callum's contact details? If so, could you PM me, please.

Cheers
