Help with Mk 21 Beaufighter colors and markings

Postby MikeK » Sat May 23, 2020 3:44 am

Hello all,
I am interested in building a Mk 21 Beaufighter from 31 Squadron RAAF.
I have the DK Decals 1/72 72001 "Beaufighter in RAAF service" decals sheet.
http://www.dkdecals.cz/navod_beaufighter.jpg

Plane #9 is "EH-C" "A8-6" in foliage green and earth brown with a animal illustration on the nose.

In a Britmodeller thread, a user states "this is one of the Aust built Mk 21's repainted by 31 Sqn from all over Foliage Green to Mid Green/Medium Grey over Light Blue," https://www.britmodeller.com/forums/index.php?/topic/235020313-raaf-beaufighter-colours/page/2/

OK, no problem, the DK Decals illustrate the wrong colors.

My next problem comes with the serial and call letters and markings.

ADF serials has a photo of A8-6 coded as "EH-N" and there does not appear to be the animal on the nose.
A8-23 was coded "EH-C" and had a tiger's head (clearly not what is on the decals sheet)

To confuse the matter more, on the above mentioned Britmodeller thread, there is a photo of the plane with the same animal illustration (dog?) as the DK decals sheet, and the user captioned it as "Aust built Mk 21 A8-8 EH-K, this is also in the 31 Sqn repaint scheme , note the lower light colour believed to be light blue not normal of Aust Mk 21's"

However, ADF Serials states A8-8 was coded "EH-A" with 'Ailsa Joan' on the nose. (the source is Parnell p115; however, I do not have this book).

In the Britmodeller photo, the airplane is clearly named "Winston". AND, if you look carefully, it appears to me that the last code letter has a complete flat bottom, thus indicating a C, or D, or O, etc not a letter with two legs.

I'd like to make the most accurately marked model possible and appreciate any help you can offer.
Thanks

Winston' was A8-6 EH-K. It carried a Bulldog on the nose rather than the usual Tiger's Head as the pilot was British. The EH was carried behind the roundel thus the flat bottom to the last letter.

Hi Mike

To add to what Steve has said.

What you may find useful is a read of the Adf-serials Spring 2019 Newsletter, which you can download as per the link below as a pdf. It describes in more detail the aircraft you have mentioned. EH-N for instance is mentioned as A8-5 not A8-6

http://adf-serials.com.au/newsletter/ADF%20Telegraph%202019%20Spring.pdf

An excerpt for A8-6 as follows. (but please don't paint the exhaust cowl copper!)

MikeK

A correction to my post, info for which came from an old Forum posting re the disruptive camo scheme on the 31 Sqn machines (which apparently had an incorrect code...). Gary Shepparton has provided some more info via email.

'Winston' was EH-G (not EH-K) A8-6 (a better photo attached) that I located.

The photo of EH-N on the ADF Serials site is A8-5 (an error by the contributor at the time)

The full ADF Serials Newsletter issue which Ozhawk40 referred to can be found online at http://adf-serials.com.au/newsletter/AD ... Spring.pdf

And there are a few extra serial tie-ups to that article (contributed by Gary Shepparton) at the end of the next issue http://adf-serials.com.au/newsletter/AD ... Summer.pdf

Worth downloading for a perusal if doing a RAAF Beau. The AZ decals are still very usable for this unusual scheme by substituting a correct 'G' for the incorrect letter provided. I don't know who supplied the info to Franta from DK (not me).
