C 130E reference images

Postby rodenlee » Sun Aug 11, 2019 6:42 pm

He all
I have started on a 1/72 RAAF C130 and am planning on a white over grey version. I am trying to track down various detail colours and would really appreciate any help please.

In particular, I am seeking colours for:

Flightdeck
Wheel wells and wheels
Upper fuselage walkway colours. The Aussiedecals set I have indicates the walkways are FS 36622 but that looks too dark for the references I have seen.

Thanks for any help team

Cheers

I have the original paint drawings for this somewhere. The wheel wells were all silver and the flight deck a cream colour (Radome Tan is close) for the upper and seats with a green lower section. Instrument panel and centre pedestal were light grey. I'll see if I can find the details for you.

Found them and some photos I took about 20 years ago.

My scratchings are all over them and they're not that clear. What the colour readouts say is:

8010-012-7608 Light Admiralty Grey Gloss Lacquer (overall)
L81863 Torpedo Grey Bunefex over two coats of zinc chromate (area between the wing splices)
8010-018-5110 Gloss White (top surfaces)

None of these is a current ADF paint, so I can't give you the BS or FS equivalents. There were variations of this scheme over the years. I used FS595-16440 for the grey and FS595-17875 for the white - pretty sure the 486SQN painters gave me those numbers.

Note the walkways are painted with a non-slip coating, which makes the grey matt and appear a little darker than the surrounding colour.

These are scans of prints, so not the best quality but you get the idea:

No worries. Sky is a pretty good match for the light green used in the interior, too. Note the black Flight Deck floors look a little blue due to the scanning process!

I built the Esci kit in 2007 in 37SQN colours. I used the Airfix C-130 instructions for the colours on mine.

I thought so but apparently not. It's at https://www.scalemates.com/profiles/mate.php?id=35291&p=albums&album=38670

Annoyingly, I realised later I'd missed the exhaust vents at the top rear of the engine nacelles and the anti-collision beacons, too. I've got a C-130H and C-130J-30 still to do (using the Italeri kits with lots of AM accessories) and won't make those mistakes again!! Don't get too worried about the Flight Deck interior as most of it won't be seen anyway. I worked on C-130E/H/J for nine years, so if you have any questions; ask.

Beautiful work from both Ray and your good self Rob. The ESCI seems to have an odd shape windscreen or is it me??

Thanks very much for your offer of help Rob...you may yet regret that!

My connection with the -E and -H are as an ATC at Laverton Tower many moons ago...lots of visits courtesy of the Southern Service but never took any photos...

I don't know; I reckon it's a reasonable shape but I did make the lines too thick on mine. I'd do it differently now but those were done with liquid mask and the windows should be bigger than I made them. I think the ESCI kit's a reasonable facsimile of the real thing (better than Italeri's attempt, I reckon - I have two of those to build) but we're well overdue for a decent 1/72 C-130 - come on Airfix/Tamiya/Eduard!
