"Tribute to the Ausy DC-9" AMI Group Build

Postby TOR » Sun Aug 26, 2012 4:39 pm

Hi all,
Well I guess I will get the ball rolling. As indicated on the main forum, this Group Build is essentially intended to pay tribute to, recognise, and acknowledge the immortal DC-9 in Australian sevice. It was inspired by the recent, (and excellent :D ), Red Roo/Fly 1:144th limited edition release of a series of Ausy DC-9 kits. The criteria/scope of this GB is simple...it can include any DC-9 and/or variant, in any scale, by any manufacturer, as long as it is AUSTRALIAN, (WIFs included). The GB commenced Saturday 25th August 2012 and will conclude on Monday 31st December 2012.
So..here is my contributions and progress so far:

Image
Kit Manufacturer: InFormation/Contrails
Scale: 1:144
Aircraft-type: Boeing 717-200 (MD-95)
Subject: Impulse Airlines "Blue Cockatoo" final scheme

Image
Kit Manufacturer: Airfix
Scale: 1:144
Aircraft-type: Douglas DC-9-30
Subject: (WIF) RAAF VIP 34SQN Douglas VC-9A (DC-9-30).

Image
Kit Manufacturer: Red Roo/Fly
Scale: 1:144
Aircraft-type: McDonnell Douglas DC-9-30
Subject (WIF) Australian Airlines final scheme

So now it's back to the model room. I will keep you all updated with my progress.

Fantastic mighty tor. Can I suggest that the mods make this a forum like the monogram group build above please? Then each builder can have his own thread. Rather than tacking onto this thread. Good idea?

I'm picking up a TAA one this arvo so count me in :)

EDIT: I now have a TAA DC-9 in my hot little hands. Best I get the Dh88 finished as I've only got 4 months to finish the DC-9. No pressure
Brother: Do you really need that many Phantoms?
Me: Don't make me kick you outta the shed for asking dumb questions
Brother: But are you gonna build all these models?
Me: Yeah of course I am. Now get outta my shed

I like it, but think to look aerodynamically sound you would need some canards near the nose

Ansett shooting star scheme would look the bees knees

thought about it......

jury is still out on the canards... the engines should be able to correct any aircraft "attitude" issues.....

I have just recieved my aftermarket Contrail 1:144th P&W JT-8 DC-9 engines, and they are really nice. They could be easily fitted to the Fly or Airfix kit with ease, and it appears that, where the Fly kit is concerned, these engines fix the " narrow pylon" issue by default.
Hey BB, I like your wif but I was thinking...why not upper-wing mount the engines, (for "blown" flap effect...great for those Australian secondary airfield short runways this jet would have opearted into), and fit forward canards to compensate??
